This blog is about how to ‘become’ and how to ‘be’ a senior technology executive. Whether you’re a student starting out, a budding CTO at a start-up or you’re angling to become CIO at a big corporation, the intention of this blog is to give you practical advice to help you on your journey.
My personal journey started writing software applications for banks and brokerages, took me to San Francisco for nearly 10 years as a consultant at Thoughtworks and saw me wearing a Mickey Mouse hat at meetings to reimagination the worlds most famous theme park.
I don’t claim to have seen everything in the industry, but I’ve seen a lot.
As a kid Software Engineer, I noticed that one of the things that my first boss would do every day before he went home was to write up notes in a big black book.
He was a good boss. I picked up the same habit.
Without really noticing until a few years ago when I opened my office cabinet and realized I’ve single handedly helped to keep Moleskine in business, I’ve accidently left a trail of bread crumbs that documents my career.
Buried in hundreds of pages of notes are copious examples of the types of situations that if you’re in this industry you’ll find yourself in every day.
Sometimes situations worked out, sometimes they didn’t. Regardless of what they were, what I did and what happened are all there.
Via the notes in my little black books, I hope to share stories and give you some practical advice on how to become or how to be a senior technology executive.
